1. Chapter 1 Some Important Facts: Read chapter and give a title to each paragraph. What student wants out of this class: Question: A good sermon should have?: A: aim B: objective. Question: What two essential factors go hand in hand? Question: What is one the greatest problems of preachers? Question: What is a good sermon? Question: Above everything else a sermon should be________Question: How should the sermon be made interesting and inspiring? Question: Preach to personal ________Question: What are the two distinct realms in the field of thought? Question: What does the chapter say concerning illustrative material?

 

2. Chapter 2 Pulpit Behavior: Read and outline chapter: Give examples to illustrate lesson: 1. Seek divine help? 2. Be inspired by your message? 3. Be full of your message? 4. Spiritual things spiritually discerned? 5. Convey current events? 6. Interest instincts of inquiry? 7. Preach personal concerns? 8. Cover concrete and conceptual  material?  9. Illustrate to illuminate? 10. Give overview of methods and types?

4. Chapter 4 The Persuasive Method:  Example: Subject: Text: I. Proposition: 2. II. Conclusion: 1. Answer: 2. What should we do: 1.  What does the persuasive method seek to do? 2. What are the five things to do in using the persuasive method? 3. Take the subject of Sin or Hell make an outline choosing something to prove. 4. Make a complete list and choose the best ones why God’s love is far-reaching. 5. Assemble the evidence for the proof that God’s love is great. 6. Take the evidence in 5 one by one and find scriptures that prove them. 7. What is the function of the introduction in persuasive method? 8. What does the fact of the theme mean? 9. If the subject is properly stated it will contain what two things? 10. Why must this method contain at least one proposition? 11. 7. Chapter 7 The Synthesis Method: Example: Text: Introduction: I. The Historical Summary: II. The Doctrinal or Teaching Aspect: III. Conclusion: The Practical Value: Use synthesis method for biographies and great subjects.

8. Chapter 8 The Analysis Method: Example: Text: I. Principal Thoughts or Elements of Thought. II. Explain or Enlarge by the Bible. III. Practical Application. Do Exercises I, II. III.     

 

9. Chapter 9 The Commentary Method: Example: Text: I. Observe the text as it relates to the context. II. Observe the time, place and occasion under consideration. III. Observe who is speaking or writing, the general subject under consideration as it relates to the context. IV. Find a title for your sermon, which will comprehend as nearly as possible each outstanding thought in the text. V. Use the outstanding thoughts in the text as your topics of discussion, thus forming your outline. 6. Using your topics for discussion, enlarge upon them always in harmony with the text as a whole and with all other Scriptures, which may be related to it.
